Irvine Meadow XI 2 (1) The Ayrshire heat seemed to get to both sets of players as the good form shown in Pollok's intensive pre-season schedule wilted at Meadow Park. With some of the squad carrying knocks, the starting line-up had more enforced changes, though key men such as Wilson, Logan, Nelson and Aitchison all came into the side that started against Muirkirk.

Gavin Friels under pressure To be fair, Meadow were deserving winners, though the opening half an hour was fairly even, with Friels and McLauchlan having chances for Lok. But with 31 minutes played Meadow, took the lead when after a corner CAMPBELL fired a low shot though a forest of legs beyond the despairing dive of Ian Wilson. Just before half time, a good cross-field pass from Friels found Logan whose cross into the box was headed behind. McPhee then had a snap-shot blocked by Connick.

Early in the second half came a clash of heads between Paul McMenamin and Meadow's Gerry McLaughlin with both needing treatment. Lok's next chance fell to Raymond Logan who headed over. Impressive Meadow forward Jamie Allison thundered a shot off the bar from range in the 65th minute but the game exploded into life soon after when the aforementioned McLaughlin caught McMenamin after making a challenge. Tempers immediately flared, with the young Lok midfielder reacting with venomous fury, kicking out at his assailant. Once the usual all-in scrum had calmed, the referee took the only decision he could and sent both players off.

The game boils over
McLaughlin gets close to McLauchlan Pollok still pushed for the equaliser with Friels heading a Nelson corner over, while sub Gibson, who came on for Crozier early in the half, made a useful contribution, especially when fellow sub Doyle flighted an inch-perfect cross-field path onto his right foot that he volleyed very close to Connick's left hand post. A Gibson cross was then headed over, but Meadow made it 2-0 in the 85th minute when he blotted his copy book by being disposessed by JAMIE ALLISON who although was initially blocked by Wilson, showed excellent agility to semi-volley on the turn the loose ball, low along the ground and into the net.
A back post header from Pollok's 3rd sub Derek Paterson that Connick again saved was the last Lok chance, though the ex-Cumnock man's game ended prematurely when he was dismissed for violent conduct after striking an opponent who had reacted badly to a tackle. Meadow clear a Lok attack
Pollok: Wilson, Sweeney, McMenamin, Aitchison, Heaton, Nelson (sub 77 for Paterson), Crozier (sub 54 for Trialist A), Logan, Friels, McLauchlan, McPhee (sub 72 for Trialist B). Not used: Burns, O'Neil, McNeill.

Pollok 1 (0) Lok assistant Harry Erwin used this fixture with Ayrshire District League side Muirkirk to ring the changes, with six alterations made to the starting line-up, and young Peter Jordon being given yet another role to undertake, on this occasion in the heart of midfield.

Danny Moy gathers a Lok effort on goal Pollok dominated the opening spell of the game, but the midfield was one area that never seemed to be fully functional, with the creative forces of Logan, Haggarty, and Nelson on the bench, and there being no place in the team at all for Tinney and Crozier. The best chance fell to Martin McLauchlan who found himself one on one with Muirkirk's veteran goalkeeper Danny Moy, with the former East Kilbride keeper blocking the shot and then doing enough to put McLauchlan off doing damage with the rebound.
Despite the midfield perhaps not firing on full cylinders, Peter Jordan looked composed in the early stages, and was winning challenges and making a few telling passes, while Jamie Doyle showed in flashes what skills he has, and in the 19th minute he fired a powerful shot over the bar. Chris Sweeney wins a challenge
Gavin Friels wins this tackle At the other end Rab Burns was called into action to save from Dunlop, a reminder that Muirkirk had not come to be beaten easily. A McMenamin free-kick in first half stoppage time that Moy saved rounded off the first half action.
Chris Taylor warmed Burns' hands again straight after the re-start, though Chris McAneny was subbed for the visitors after crocking McMenamin as he played in McLauchlan, picking up a yellow card from the official. Pollok took the lead on the hour and it was sub Frankie Haggarty that created it with a cross from the left that GAVIN FRIELS met by getting ahead of the Muirkirk defence to fire the ball into the net from close range.
Peter Jordan is sandwiched by two Muirkirk opponents
The Lok defence in the first half Chris Sweeney then headed over as Lok began to push more forcefully for the second goal and in the 73rd minute Haggarty lashed a shot over the bar. Gibson then played Haggarty through on Hoy, but again the Muirkirk keeper made a save. Raymond Logan rifled a shot wide in the 81st minute and the same player headed against the bar six minutes from time. The final action involved Jordan, who after one or two wayward passes late on managed to get a shot on goal that although Moy saved, will have done his confidence some good.
Pollok: Burns, McWilliams (sub 55 for Paterson), Baker, Gayne, Sweeney, Doyle (sub 60 for Gibson), McPhee, Jordan, Friels (sub 68 for Logan), McLauchlan (sub 55 for Haggarty), McMenamin. Not used: Wilson, Aitchison, Nelson.
Muirkirk: Moy, Johnston, Taylor, Brannigan, A. Banks, Barclay, McAneny (sub 47 for Divers), S. Banks, Dunlop (sub 79 for Marshall), McEwan (sub 66 for Queen), McGowan.

Pollok 3 (1) Sons boss Brian Fairlie was unlikely to have been too pleased with this result as Pollok made a short work of the gap between the Juniors and Division Two with a well-drilled performance from another Lok team sprinkled with trialists. On the bench was ex-Auchinleck Talbot striker Gavin Friels, who made a noticeable impression coming on.
Dumbarton 0 (0)
Pollok scorers: Raymond Logan (17), Gavin Friels 73, Trialist C 79

Considering the standard of the opponents, the 250-odd crowd probably came more in hope than expectation, and Dumbarton began brightly, with Gordon Herd volleying over in 10 minutes. However, it was Lok who opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a goal that was instigated by Frankie Haggarty, going on a run through the heart of the Dumbarton defence.

McPhee and Proctor watch Logan's effort hit the back of the net His eventual shot didn't test ex-Knightswood and Queen's Park keeper Terry Magennis but from his corner, and a subsequent goalmouth scramble, RAYMOND LOGAN fired in a low shot past the trialist Sons goalkeeper, drafted in to replace crocked No 1 Steve Grindlay.
Martin McLauchlan's turn and shot that went over, a Paul Ronald effort that hit the bar and Jimmy McPhee slicing an attempt on goal wide of target were the other key moments of the opening 45 minutes. Both sides made changes at the break, with Gavin Friels making his first appearance in black and white. Derek Heaton gets to grips with his opponent
Stevies Gayne and Aitchison give Graeme Donald some attention Pollok could have gone further ahead in the 56th minute when Friels laid the ball off for Logan whose on-target shot was blocked, and Chris Sweeney then had two further attempts blocked. Young Lok trialist David Arthur made a very positive impression when he came on upfront and it was the double menace of Friels and Arthur that led to the second Lok goal in the 73rd minute.
Both players closed down Magennis, and as Friels tried to beat him, a break of the ball saw Arthur then having a shot from close in that blocked by a Dumbarton defender though GAVIN FRIELS couldn't be denied from six yards and buried the ball with glee. Gavin Friels fires in his first goal in Lok colours
Raymond Logan wins this challenge Pollok went three goals clear in the 79th minute when Friels dispossessed Magennis and fired towards goal only to see the ball thump back off the post but DAVID ARTHUR had chased the shot up and tapped in from very close range. From a Pollok perspective, it was a fine workout all round then, though Dumbarton were disappointing.
Pollok: Wilson, Trialist A, Aitchison, Gayne (sub 45 for Heaton), Sweeney, Nelson (sub 56 for Crozier), Haggarty (sub 66 for Trialist D), Logan, Proctor (sub 56 for Trialist C), McLauchlan (sub 45 for Friels), McPhee (sub 56 for Tinney). Not used: Burns.

Annan Athletic 0 (0) The 2 hour trek to the Solway Firth proved to be a worthwhile trip for the Pollok players, officials and supporters who enjoyed the hospitality of the East of Scotland Premier Division side in gusty conditions. With some players picking up knocks in previous games, the team had to be switched around to compensate.

Athletic, bossed by former Brechin City stalwart Harry Cairney, were a bit of an unknown quantity for Pollok as games against Senior non-league opposition are few and far between. The match proved to be quite spirited though, but was spoiled by the strong, swirling wind. Martin McLauchlan under pressure
Peter Jordan takes on Gall Peter Jordan looked one of Pollok's best players in the early exchanges, but it was Annan who could have gone ahead in the 26th minute but for the sharp reactions of Ian Wilson coming out to block when ex-Queen of the South midfielder Gary Cochrane played in another former Queens youngster Ross Kerr (who's twin Gary, yet another ex-QOS player, was also in the side).
Raymond Logan then headed over the bar from a couple of Tinney crosses as Lok looked to make the breakthough. The first half ended on a slightly sour note when one of Pollok's trialists had to be substituted at the referee's request for making a rash tackle on ex-Rangers kid Chris Jardine. Frankie Haggarty was therefore introduced to the game slightly earlier than planned.

McLauchlan denied With Rab Sneddon holidaying, Harry Erwin and Jim Friel were taking the team and they decided to bring on McMenamin, Sweeney and Aitchison at the interval for McWilliams, Baker and Gayne. Just after the hour mark, Robert Burns was brought on for Ian Wilson and he immediately was called into action to deal with a long-range shot.
John Tinney then fired in a shot from the left in one of the rare efforts on goal, though Annan nearly took the lead themselves when Gary Kerr missed a good chance. Pollok were not to be denied a third win this season however, as in 81 minutes sub Lorn Gibson's cross-field pass found MARTIN MCLAUCHLAN who delivered a low finish past ex-Craigmark and Nithsdale keeper Derek Gall. A young Pollok trialist tries to impress those watching

As mentioned above, Annan Athletic's hospitality was second to none and they looked after the travelling party very well indeed. Pollok FC wishes them well for 2004-05, and in particular their quest for Scottish Cup qualification.

Albion Rovers XI 0 (0) Pollok were back in action against a combination of Albion Rovers' Reserve and U19 squad while their first team were beating Camelon 5-2 in Falkirk. Manager Rab Sneddon made a few changes to the starting line-up that beat Camelon, though the team that finsihed the 90 minutes was arguably stronger than the one that kicked the match off.

The team fielded by Rovers youth boss Jimmy Lindsay was very young, with only a scattering of old heads to help them through the game, though they enjoyed the lion's share of the early pressure, and forced the debutant trialist Lok keeper to look busy on more than one occasion. Lok's first chance came from a Baker cross that the Rovers keeper could only knock on towards Proctor who shot over. Jimmy McPhee midflight
McLauchlan rounds the keeper Rovers increasingly looked the more likely team to score in the first half, but in 33 minutes, Martin McLauchlan created a chance for Pollok when he broke down the left channel and cut in on the keeper, dragging the ball wide of his diving body, but he was unable to cut the ball in from a narrow angle. Proctor then played in Crozier but the ex-St. Johnstone youngster shot over. In truth, the first half was not something to write home about.

The introduction of Ian Wilson, Martin Nelson and a 19 year old trialist with experience of life in the Engish Premiership as well as a Scottish League side at half time made a difference to Pollok. Derek Paterson also looked more accomplished in central defence, replacing Stevie Gayne. Martin Nelson tries to evade a tackle

The second half was seconds old when Lok opened the scoring, and it was KEVIN PROCTOR with a fine individual goal that was cracked in from just inside the area, his third strike in two games.

Action in the Rovers goalmouth The introduction of Peter Jordan on the left of midfield heralded some more direct play from Lok, with the former Lok Juvenile looking to get forward and test the Rovers keeper as often as he could. Pollok looked in control of the game though, and Albion Rovers were reduced to shooting from distance themselves. Ian Wilson, who had come on as a substitute at half-time had to make a save five minutes from time to preserve the Lok win.
Pollok: Trialist A (sub 45 for Wilson), Sweeney, Baker, Aitchison, Gayne (sub 45 for Nelson), Paterson, Crozier (sub 45 for Trialist B), Logan (sub 61 for Haggarty), McLauchlan (sub 61 for Trialist C), Proctor (sub 57 for McPhee), Tinney (sub 61 for Trialist D).

Camelon 0 (0) Only 38 days after the last competitive match, Pollok were back in action with a friendly game against Camelon of the Whyte & Mackay East Superleague. Roadworks that delayed Pollok's kit from arriving and a seasonal downpour hardly set a relaxed scene for the 2004-05 season.

Pollok scorer: Kevin Proctor (43, 52)

Jimmy McPhee and Kevin Proctor kick off the 2004-05 season Frank Haggarty (an attacking central midfielder on this evidence) and John Tinney (left midfield) were both given debuts in midfield by the new management team of Rab Sneddon and Harry Erwin, with the other nine places in the team being taken up by players from last season. There were however a further four unfamiliar faces on the bench, alongside a handful of Pollok players from the previous season.
Camelon enjoyed the bulk of the play early on, through Frank Haggarty, who showed a great willingness to get forward, hit a few wayward shots over MacPherson's bar. Kevin Proctor then had a shot deflected in the 13th minute with Nelson then warming MacPherson's hands with a low drive soon after. Pollok by now were carving out the better chances and Brendan Crozier was very unlucky to see a fine free-kick thud back into play off the Camelon keeper's left-hand post. Ronnie MacPherson is called into action by Lok
Pollok on the attack in the second half At the other end, Wilson had to claw away a well directed header as the Mariners looked to take the lead. Pollok opened the scoring in the 43rd minute though when Brendan Crozier set up KEVIN PROCTOR in the home side's box and his quick-thinking finish from 12 yards left MacPherson helpless.
The second half seemed to suffer what many friendlies do when many substitutions are made. Pollok brought on four substitutes at half-time though they were soon two goals clear of Camelon when KEVIN PROCTOR tapped in at the back post from a low cross. The main theme of the remainder of the game was a succession of changes being made by both sides, and from a Lok perspective there were few conclusions to draw this early into the pre-season programme. Aitchison and Heaton enjoy a break in play
