Pollok 4 (3) Pollok gave a fine account of themselves in front of a big holiday weekend crowd at Newlandsfield and more importantly maintain their 100% record in the league. Paul McNeill was the only high profile player who missed out because of being away, but that allowed Drew McWilliams his first start of the season.

Martin McLauchlan - the creative spark up front

And it was DREW MCWILLIAMS who opened the Lok scoring in 12 minutes when he scrambled in a David Hamilton cross though the Talbot defence, which looked shakey throughout the first half, perhaps shouldn't have afforded the wily Lok forward so much space. Talbot's day got worse when veteran stopper Fraser Church, a recent signing from Shotts Bon Accord, turned a McLauchlan cutback past his own keeper just after the half hour mark. A poor first half for the visitors, who were cheered on by a big travelling support, got worse when Alan Blaikie pulled down Martin Nelson in the area shortly before the break, and DAVID HAMILTON converted his penalty with ease.

Tam McDonald brought on David Clarke and John Traynor at half-time to try and shake things up a bit, and to be fair Talbot were improved for the latter 45 minutes, but the damage had long since been done. Despite having a little more possession, 'Bot fell further behind in 74 minutes when McLauchlan's cross was gloriously volleyed past McIntosh by RAYMOND LOGAN.

Jimmy McPhee has Talbot's Collins in a spin

With the game well and truly won, Lok dozed off and from a free-kick, needlessly conceded by O'Neil, GAVIN FRIELS pulled one back for Talbot in 77 minutes, and the visitors added a flattering second in 85 minutes when the Lok right flank was posted missing, giving Clarke the freedom of Newlandsfield to drill in a low cross, and GAVIN FRIELS again was allowed time to pick his spot. It's churlish to dwell on the negative considering the exceptional performance in the first 75 minutes of the game, so a big well done to Pollok!
Standouts were David Hamilton and the tireless Jimmy McPhee, while Martin McLauchlan is becoming increasingly vital to the Lok attack with his ability to create chances for others around him. And the performances of Stevie Aitchison at sweeper have also been a major part in Pollok's defence (for the most part) being a much improved version of the one that won the title. It was also good for the fans to finally see Martin Baker run out and play a competitive game at Newlandsfield.

Saturday 20th September 2003 - Gasworks Park. West of Scotland Premier League. Att: 400 Report from Martin Donnelly
Larkhall Thistle 0 (0) Pollok maintained their winning start to their league campaign with a well deserved two goal victory at Gasworks Park. The visitors very nearly opened the scoring in the first minute when a Paul McMenamin free kick found the head of Raymond Logan, but his effort was cleared off the line. It took 11 minutes for the home side to force a save from Iain Wilson, when the big 'keeper easily held a long range volley from Stewart Bovill.

McMenamin and Hamilton look upfield

Wilson had to be sharp again six minutes later when a Steven Pettit through ball released Andy Thomson, but last seasons Player Of The Year was again up to the challenge. Pollok continued to press at the other end, with both Martin McLauchlan and Paul McNeill seeing headers flash just over the crossbar. 'Lok seemed certain to make the breakthrough after 23 minutes when Jimmy McPhee wriggled his way into space, and his through ball found Logan. Craig Marshall in the Thistle goal, however, made an outstanding save from point blank range to keep the scoresheet blank. The McPhee and Logan combination were instrumental, however, in finally breaking down the home defence after 41 minutes. A good passing move resulted in McPhee picking the ball up on the Pollok right, and his cross into the box was met perfectly by the head of RAYMOND LOGAN to send the visitors into the interval with a slender one goal lead.

Pollok had the chance to extend their lead seven minutes after the restart when a Kevin O'Neil run and pass found McMenamin in the box, but the chance was lost amid half-hearted penalty shouts from the away support. Thomson again tested Wilson before Gary Faulds made the first tactical switch of the afternoon, introducing John McShane for Andy McFarlane.

In the 63rd minute, however, the home side were left with a real mountain to climb as 'Lok doubled their lead. A McMenamin corner was again met by RAYMOND LOGAN, who powered home his second header of the game. Faulds threw on both Allan Watson and Alan Paterson for Andy Thomson and Ian McCreadie in an attempt to save the game, but it was the visitors who looked more likely to score again with McLauchlan firing narrowly wide twice in quick succession.

McNeill is felled once again

Lok celebrate goal number two

There was time for Paul McNeill to hit the post before he made way for Drew McWilliams with 14 minutes to play, and it was to be McWilliams that picked up the first booking of the game with just 9 minutes left to play after a verbal volley at the assistant referee over a free kick for shirt pulling. Watson was to follow him into the book after a late challenge on Pollok substitute John McGowan.
There was time for one last 'Lok effort when a long free kick into the box found Drew McWilliams, but his weak effort was again cleared off the line. Pollok can be very satisfied with a well earned three points against a team who had caused them problems in their recent Sectional League Cup clash.

Pollok 5 (5) Any Vale fans might probably finger Ramzan Bashir as being culpable of helping Lok to their convincing romp this afternoon, but that included, the black and white side were totally dominant against Central Division 1 opposition. Lok took the lead in 9 minutes through DAVID HAMILTON when he headed a McNeill cross past Dennison, but Vale levelled not too long later through a DEREK HEATON own goal when Lees's shot was pushed wide of the post by Wilson only for the full-pelt Lok stopper to thump the ball into his own net.

Craig looks skyward as Lok look for another one

A neat 1-2 between Nelson and Logan set up HAMILTON for Lok to go ahead once more in 24 minutes, and a piledriver from MARTIN MCLAUCHLAN was parried into th net by Dennison two minutes on. With 37 minutes played a fine Craig effort when he flciked the ball over the keeper was followed up by MCLAUCHLAN for his second.

Controversially Lok won a penalty in 40 minutes when Logan was brought down at the angle of the box by a Vale defender. After a five minute protest/stoppage in which two Vale defenders were booked and one of their coaches was sent off, HAMILTON held his nerve to convert for 5-1 and his treble. With the tie won, the second half is best described as a non-event.

Pollok look to threaten the 'Hill goal in the 1st half

Pollok made inroads into the shaky 'Hill defence early on, with David Hamilton and Derek Heaton both having chances. With 10 minutes played, David Craig had a shot saved, and shorlty afterwards both McNeill and Heaton failed to net. McLauchlan passed up a sitter midway through the first half when he was clar with only Black to beat, but he dithered and the chance passed. Craig Porter joined in the profligacy at the other end, while Heaton and Loagn continued to miss chances for Lok, but on the stroke of half time though a Nelson free-kick found DAVID CRAIG and the ex-Peterborough midfielder steered a header across Black into the bottom left hand corner.

Ian Wilson proved to be in fine form in the second half, denying Maryhill on more than one occasion with fantastic reflexes. Maryhill levelled in the 66th minute however when STEPHEN MILLER connected with Porter's cross before firing a shot that left Wilson, for once, helpless. Pollok didn't waste too much time taking the lead again though, and Drew McWilliams was involved in the build-up before PAUL MCNEILL was played in on Black, and with a touch he steadied himself then lashed the ball high past Black. Maryhill could have equalised as the game wore on but luck was not with them.
