Clydebank 1 (1) If Junior football's nadir was last weekend, then cup ties in the days after have given a little optimism that our game is not just full of Tams and Rabs, hackers and punters. The 798 at Glenhead Park saw a good game only marred by the hard surface, a by-product of playing in late May.
Pollok 3 (2)
Clydebank scorer: Mark Hailstones 41

Pollok scorers: Brendan Crozier 21, 78, Raymond Logan 38

Pollok's 16 had a few changes from the last game, with Jimmy McPhee and Martin McLauchlan missing out through being on holiday, allowing Drew McWilliams and fit again Raymond Logan to return to the side. There was also positive news for two of the club's younger players, with David Craig returning from injury and Stevie Gayne coming off the bench after nine months frozen out by ex-boss Ronnie Lowrie.

Lok began brightly with Drew McWilliams shooting wildy over Mehigan's bar in the sixth minute though Hailstones forced Ian Wilson into action shortly after. Pollok enjoyed a fair share of early possession without hitting the target, and both Proctor and McWilliams passed up other opportunities before the deadlock was broken by BRENDAN CROZIER in 21 minutes with a low shot from the angle of the box.
Maxwell then found himself bearing down on Wilson after dispossessing Aitchison but Heaton made an excellent tackle to stop him. Pollok's second goal came in 38 minutes through RAYMOND LOGAN with a right footed volley from 12 yards out. Bankies pulled one back however in the 41st minute when Wilson spilled what looked like a harmless effort from distance into the path of MARK HAILSTONES who bundled the ball over the line.

The second half continued along a similar pattern with Proctor heading over Hamilton's floated cross and Crozier having a free-kick saved. McWilliams nearly netted his first goal in months but for the foot of Mehigan, and McWilliams had two further efforts off target as Lok stepped up the pressure. It wasn't all one way traffic though and a Bankies free-kick was deflected wide in 74 minutes.
Raymond Logan then hit the post at the other end but Lok's third goal was a sublime piece of skill from BRENDAN CROZIER who upon receiving possession near the left touchline juggled the ball, took a touch to create a bit of space then powered a low shot past Mehigan to put Lok into the
quarter-finals for the second year running. The only other chance of note was Logan shooting wide late on, though Lok did pick up a few late bookings for some hefty challenges.

Credit to Clydebank for a very professional way of running things, with the enthusiasm and energy around the place, I'd be staggered if the Bankies didn't propel themselves upwards through sheer will-power alone.

Kilbirnie Ladeside 1 (0) The 2003-04 Caledonian Paper West Premier League season came to a close for Pollok on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Kilbirnie Ladeside.

Ladeside scorer: Andy Carberry 66

Pollok scorers: Jimmy McPhee 15, Martin McLauchlan 21

Fielding an unchanged starting XI, the stand-in management team of Kevin O'Neil and Mark McWilliams aided by match secertary Frannie McNeill were hoping for the side to record back to back victories for the first time in the league since February, and that's exactly what was achieved.
Lok opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a well taken goal from JIMMY MCPHEE who ran onto a fine Crozier through-ball to bear down on Burns before drilling a low shot past the Ladeside veteran. Pollok doubled their lead within six minutes of that point when Sweeney's header was half-cleared, but only as far as MARTIN MCLAUCHLAN who helped the ball over the line.
Kilbirnie from there on in actually started to give a little more to the game though it was not until the second half was well under way that they managed to pull a goal back. Martin Baker was guilty of being a little casual on the playing field side of the ground and was dispossessed by Anderson, with Ladeside substitute ANDY CARBERRY turning the then-crossed ball past Ian Wilson.
With little at stake, there will be fewer games played between the likes of Lok and Ladeside so devoid of meaningful action. For Lok now, it's the Evening Times Cup and a hazardous trip to Duntocher to face the reborn Bankies. Ladeside have been relegated and will take their place with five other new teams in the expanded Stagecoach West Division One.
Pollok: Wilson, Sweeney, Baker, Aitchison, Heaton, Crozier, Hamilton, Nelson (sub 80 for Giles), McPhee (sub 68 for McMenamin), McLauchlan (sub 76 for D. McWilliams), Proctor. Not used: Wardle, Craig.

Wednesday 12th May 2004 - Newlandsfield Park. West of Scotland Premier League. Att: 240 (pics c/o Kathryn MacLeod)
Pollok 2 (1) It has been an unsettling week at Newlandsfield but hopefully the three points picked up in this clash with city rivals Maryhill can be the catalyst for the club to go on to lift the Evening Times Cup, a tournament that gets underway in a couple of week's time.
Maryhill 1 (0)
Pollok scorers: Brendan Crozier 41, Kevin Proctor 53

Maryhill scorer: Allan Grant 87

Taking the place of the displaced trio in the dugout was match secretary Frannie McNeill, and more visibly the two longest serving players on the staff, Kevin O'Neil and Mark McWilliams. At 31 and 29 respectively though, this was perhaps the most youthful managerial pairing to have graced Newlandsfield ever perhaps?

Ronnie's replacements elected to make a couple of immediately noticeable changes, with Brendan Crozier and Kevin Proctor making their first home league starts since January, while Chris Sweeney was also brought back from cold storage to play in his natural right-back berth. Drew McWilliams' presence on the bench raised a few eyebrows but he was his usual self when he was brought on for the last ten minutes.

Pollok began brightly and enjoyed the lions share of possession, but never looked like giving Scott Black in the Maryhill goal too much trouble. 'Hill's intensive schedule of six games in twelve days was perhaps taking its toll on them, and it gets no better with four games coming up between now and the 21st.

In the 16th minute Lok had the ball in the back of the net but Kevin Proctor was adjudged to have been offside. Nine minutes later Martin McLauchlan was played in on Black but blasted his shot over the bar and another Lok chance fell to David Hamilton, the former Motherwell youth seemingly but unsurprisingly being watched by senior scouts, but Black blocked at his feet.

Lok finally opened the scoring four minites before half-time, and it was the youngest Lok man on the pitch that delivered. BRENDAN CROZIER picked up possession on the right of midfield, ran forward to beat three men and as he broke into the box with the ball seemingly glued to his boot, drove a low shot across Black that thudded off the Maryhill keeper's right-hand upright and back into the net. It was a moment of magic from the ex-Senior who is one of the most gifted and skillful players I have seen playing Junior football.

Crozier's goal was what split the teams at the break, though in the 53rd minute, Lok found their lead had doubled, and it was KEVIN PROCTOR who turned a casual passback past Black from the edge of the six-yard box. It was Proctor's seventh goal of the season, but considering that was only his seventh start of the season it is worth noting that he has scored in four of those seven starts, and where he has come on as sub, the minutes have been: 81, 76, 85, 85, 29 (McLauchlan knocked out at Maryhill), 77 (scored v Kilwinning), 84, 81, 74, 55, 62, 59 (scored v Johnstone Burgh), 71, 86, 62 (scored v Greenock), 58, 71.

Maryhill valiantly tried to get back into the game, and Stevie Aitchison did well to head a Watret effort off the line in an intense period of Maryhill pressure. Proctor could have netted a stunning second only to see Black tip his effort onto the bar, but with three minutes remaining the visitors did pull one back with ALLAN GRANT drilling a shot beyond Ian Wilson. Stevie Aitchison had to make a late block to keep Pollok in front, and the points were well deserved.

Pollok's next fixture is at already relegated Kilbirnie Ladeside, and the game after that will be away to the Central District League Division Two winners in the Evening Times Cup. Despite Carluke Rovers currently being top, second placed Clydebank only need a win from two matches to clinch the title. That one of those games is a home game against Coltness United, a team who have only failed to lose on ONE occasion this season (and that was a 3-3 draw at Lesmahagow in October), means it's a certainty that Lok will be visiting 'the Hibby' to meet Clydebank. Coltness's 18 match run of defeats put East Stirling to shame!
