Saturday 21st February 2004 - Newlandsfield Park. Central League Cup. Att: 500
Pollok 1 (0) Pollok were made to work hard by a determined Vale of Leven side before eventually progressing to the next round of the Central League Cup. Lok took to the field with an unchanged line-up from the team that triumphed at Beechwood Park the previous week, with the returning David Hamilton only finding his way onto the bench.

In the early stages, however, the home side struggled to find the form of the previous week. Indeed the first shot of the match came for the visitors after only 12 seconds when Graeme McKenzie fired a weak effort wide of target. Neither team were having much success in creating from open play, but both looked threatening at set pieces. In 18 minutes Alan Brown powered a 30-yard free kick towards goal for Vale, only to see Ian Wilson tip the ball over the crossbar. Nine minutes later and Peter Dennison produced a fine save of his own, touching a Martin Nelson free kick onto the bar to deny the midfielder his first goal for the club.

Dennison then held a weak Martin McLauchlan header before the first booking of the game arrived. A hefty challenge by Jimmy McPhee produced a yellow card for the Pollok man and resulted in Steven McBride having to leave the action to be replaced by John Kemp. Half-time was reached with the game remaining goalless, the visitors having had much of the possession while rarely threatening to make the breakthrough.

Both managers made changes at the interval, with Hugh Ward replacing Dominic Ruane for Vale and Drew McWilliams and David Hamilton taking the places of Martin Nelson and Chris Sweeney for the home side. It was to be Ward who had the first real chance of the second half as he found himself through on Wilson, but his shot across the face of goal was touched wide by the 'keeper. Both Pollok substitutes were also keen to get involved in the action, with McWilliams shooting straight at Dennison and then a Hamilton header producing a fine save from the 'keeper. Dennison again had to look sharp to deny Martin Baker, saving well after a thundering drive from the full back.

Ross Hunter found his way into William Collum's notebook after 68 minutes for persistent fouling before the deadlock was broken by a moment of real quality. DAVID HAMILTON picked the ball up 40 yards from goal wide on the right and drove towards the Vale of Leven box. As he left defenders trailing he unleashed a stunning strike from the edge of the box, rattling the ball into the top left hand corner of the net, giving Dennison no chance. Hamilton was then booked for a trip a minute later.

Brian Wardle was pushed into a more attacking role for Vale, and this opened the game up for the Pollok strikers, with Drew McWilliams firing narrowly wide from the edge of the box after a quick exchange with Baker. With 10 minutes to go Hunter could consider himself fortunate to remain on the park after apparently leading with his elbow on Colin Giles, but referee Collum ruled in favour of the Millburn Park man and awarded him the free kick.

Jimmy McPhee then made way for Gary Sturrock before a second moment of individual brilliance kept the Pollok lead intact. Alex Grace found himself free in front of goal and seemed certain to score as he rifled his effort goalwards. Ian Wilson had other ideas, however, and pushed the netbound effort over the bar from point blank range. Pollok then had a three against one opportunity as McWilliams, McLauchlan and Logan broke, but when the ball arrived at Logan's feet he sliced his effort horribly wide. Frustration finally got the better of the Vale bench, who for the second time this season saw a member of their coaching staff sent to the pavilion early, where he was joined by one of their unused substitutes.

Although the game may not have been a classic it did provide one of the goals of the season and, more importantly, it saw Pollok's name go into the hat for the next round draw.

Auchinleck Talbot 0 (0) Pollok were never under any great threat from a poor Auchinleck Talbot side that, despite a bright enough start, faded as the game wore on and will likely only be spared the drop this season by the equal lack of quality elsewhere at the foot of the table. This comfortable 4-0 win was Talbot's biggest home defeat in all competitions since Glenafton won by the same margin at Beechwood Park on the 29th April 2002.

Talbot actually had a few early chances but passed them up and counter-attacking Lok, with only McLauchlan upfront, punished them by taking the lead in the 34th minute when from a Nelson corner COLIN GILES placed a low header beyond McIntosh's weak outstretched left arm. Logan then shot over as Lok began to take confidence from scoring and the lead was doubled in the 39th minute with a MARTIN MCLAUCHLAN diving header from very close range.

Pollok played some good football in the second half, as good as a poor surface allowed, and a move involving McLauchlan and McPhee down the right ended up with Logan seeing a netbound effort blocked by defender Gilmour. Logan then shot over as the chances mounted and Martin Nelson came close to scoring his first Lok goal when he found himself one on one with the keeper but McIntosh made a good save to deny the veteran midfielder.

With 62 minute gone though, Pollok added a third and it was either sublime skill or sheer fluke when JIMMY MCPHEE chipped a shot from a wide position high over McIntosh that bounced down ofd the angle of the bar and post before spinning into the net off a bemused Gilmour's heel. Gavin Friels should have pulled one back for Talbot with 20 minutes left but shot wide, and with 83 minutes played, Lok added a fourth when Proctor's crossfield pass bounced kindly on a divit for RAYMOND LOGAN who ran in on McIntosh and fired with confidence low to the keepers left.

Wilson, Sweeney, O'Neil, Aitchison, Heaton, Baker, Nelson (sub 83 for Sturrock), Logan, McLauchlan (sub 71 for Proctor), Giles, McPhee (sub 67 for D. McWilliams. Not used: Crozier, M. McWilliams.

Pollok 2 (0) Advocates for summer football would have loved this clash at Newlandsfield where the assembled 600 or so shivered through a wintery affair that Pollok were fortunate to come out of with all three points. Blizzards, high winds and torrents of rain all threatened to turn this game into a farce.

Two old faces were in injury-hit Pollok's sixteen; Colin Giles having returned from Lochore Welfare and eternally retained Lorn Gibson stepping back in from the cold to freeze on the bench. The first half was relatively uneventful with both sides creating half-chances, though Ian Wilson did have to tip one effort over the bar.

Stuart Boyd nearly opened for the visitors though in 50 minutes when Heaton slipped on the treacherous surface and his shot from 20 yards cannoned wide. Joe Carruth then also came close as Glenafton began to show glimpses of the superiority that was in evidence in the previous game at Loch Park. Richie Newall was booked by referee Euan Norris in the 56th minute for diving under the close attentions of Ian Wilson before the game swung back towards Pollok through another penalty decision.

It was a tough call for Norris as Martin McLauchlan attempted the unusual by staying on his feet when clipped but eventually tumbled as momentum took him over. Perhaps not the most convicing of penalties, and his claim was lessened by the lack of a theatrical and exaggerated tumble.
So with 70 minutes on the clock, RAYMOND LOGAN calmly beat Matthews to open the scoring from the spot.

The lead lasted only five minutes as SCOTT MILLER managed to head Glens level from close range, but Pollok were not to be outdone and yet again robbed the points when Gary Sturrock's 83rd minute free-kick crashed back off the bar and somehow the loose ball fell to COLIN GILES 20 yards out and he hit a sweet half-volley with his right foot high into Matthews' top left hand corner. Giles' tireless efforts certainly impressed many and he may prove to be a worthy asset to the team in the seasons ahead.
